An injection molding machine, also sometimes referred to as an injection press, serves the purpose of producing plastic goods through the injection molding process. This machine primarily consists of two main components: an injection unit and a clamping unit.

The Injection Molding Process

The operation of an injection molding machine involves positioning molds either horizontally or vertically. While most machines are horizontally oriented, vertical machines are utilized for specialized tasks like insert molding, leveraging gravity advantageously. The molds can be fastened using several methods, the most common being manual clamps. Alternatives such as hydraulic clamps and magnetic clamps are also used, particularly where quick tool changes are necessary.

The designer of the mold must decide whether to use a cold runner system or a hot runner system to transport plastic material and fillers from the injection unit to the mold cavities. A cold runner system features a simple channel integrated into the mold, where the plastic cools as the part solidifies and subsequently is ejected along with the final product. Conversely, a hot runner system is more complex, utilizing heaters to maintain the plastic's temperature within the runners until the part is ready for ejection.

Varieties of Injection Molding Machines

Injection molding machines can be categorized based on the type of driving systems they utilize: hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, or hybrid.

Hydraulic Machines

Hydraulic machines were historically the only available option until the introduction of the first fully electric injection molding machine by Nissei Plastic Industrial. Although hydraulic machines lack the precision of other options, they remain the most commonly used globally, apart from Japan.

Mechanical Machines

Mechanical machines implement a toggle system for applying tonnage on the clamps. This tonnage is essential to prevent the machine's clamps from opening due to injection pressure, which can cause defects like flashing.

Electric Machines

The electric press, also known as Electric Machine Technology (EMT), significantly reduces operational costs by decreasing energy consumption while addressing environmental concerns associated with hydraulic presses. Electric presses are known for their quieter operation, speed, and enhanced precision, though they typically come at a higher purchase cost.

Hybrid injection or "Servo-Hydraulic" machines combine features from both hydraulic and electric systems, although their energy consumption may resemble that of traditional electric injection molding machines.

A robotic arm is often deployed to extract molded components, typically allowing parts to free fall through a chute into a collection container.
