Felt, one of the oldest known fabrics, has evolved significantly in its applications over time. Despite this evolution, its intrinsic qualities continue to make it valuable, both in ancient times and today. This article explores the primary countries contributing to the felt market based on statistics from the International Trade Center (ITC). We focus on the category of felt that is not impregnated, coated, covered, or laminated, made from wool or fine animal hair (excluding needleloom felt and stitch-bonded fiber fabrics).

Historical Context of Felt

Evidence of felt-making dates back to before Christ, as discovered by archaeologists in ancient wall paintings. Early humans quickly recognized the remarkable properties of this fabric, utilizing it to create warm clothing, durable saddles, and robust tents.

Notable examples of ancient felt use include frozen tombs in Siberia, where nomadic horsemen were laid to rest alongside their felt garments. Roman and Greek soldiers also utilized felt in their clothing, donning felt socks, tunics, and boots. The popularity of felt spread throughout the Scandinavia region and beyond. Today, felt production occurs on a global scale, with Germany leading Europe in both production and exports. Significant suppliers also exist in Asia and the United States.

Key Producers of Felt

Germany holds a prominent position as the top producer and net exporter of wool felt. Recent statistics indicate that Germany exported €20.8 million worth of felt products, which is three times that of Italy, the second-largest exporter. The export power of Germany has remained stable over the past four years, with shares fluctuating between 30.9% to 37.3% during this period.

China follows closely behind, having exported 1,182 tons of felt last year, marking it as the highest quantity exporter globally. It is unsurprising, given China's significant role in international trade as both the largest exporter and the second-largest importer worldwide. The United States ranks as the second-largest industrial felt exporter, sending 1,128 tons abroad recently.

In the USA, felt exports surged by over 120% (507 tons) compared to the previous year (226 tons). Other producers, including India, Mexico, and Spain, reported export volumes below 500 tons in the last year. The USA's felt export value was approximately €3.2 million, reflecting continuous growth over the past four years.

India, meanwhile, has consistently increased its felt production and market share, currently ranking as the fourth-largest felt exporter with a global profit share of 6.2%, continuing to rise over the last decade.

While other countries like Mexico, Japan, Italy, and Spain also contribute to the felt export market, they remain smaller players compared to China and Germany. Historical data consistently reveals that the leading countries in felt production have remained unchanged through the years.

Final Thoughts

To summarize, the felt market is heavily influenced by major players such as Germany, China, and the USA, among others. The consistent demand for quality and diverse applications of felt ensures that these countries will continue to play pivotal roles in shaping the market.
