VCI Paper Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VCI and VpCI paper?

The abbreviation for Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor is VCI. We exclusively sell Cortec VpCI (Vapor Phase Corrosion Inhibitor) paper. The meaning is the same as both protect with the vapor phase. Only quality Cortec VCI is called VpCI.

How Long Does VCI Paper Last?

Our rolls of Cortec VpCI paper are packaged in sealed corrugated boxes. When not in use, the paper should be stored inside the box which may be taped or otherwise kept closed. This is sufficient to protect the VpCI material and maintain the paper throughout its 2 year shelf life. It is acceptable to store the paper in a sealed plastic bag if the original packaging becomes compromised.

What sizes of VCI paper are available?

We stock Cortec VpCI Paper in rolls, perforated rolls and sheets. Cortec VpCI Rolls are avilable in 600' rolls with widths ranging from 12" wide to 48" wide. The Cortec VpCI Perforated Rolls are available in 600' rolls of 12" width. The Cortec VpCI Paper Sheets are available in a variety of sizes starting with 4" x 8" sheets and going all the way up to 36" x 36" sheets.

Is VCI paper coated on one side or both?

Our Cortec VpCI paper is meant to be used with the Cortec logo facing out. The coating is on the opposite of the logo side.

How do you recommend using Cortec VpCI paper?

The VpCI paper is designed to be used as a wrapping material and packaging material for parts. It is not designed as solely an emitting device. Paper may be used to wrap materials inside a package, or used as interleaving sheets for large stacks of parts, but it not designed to be added to a specific volume of space as an emitter.

How long will VCI paper protect my parts in a sealed bag?

If the paper used to package a part and is properly sealed in a Mylar (or other plastic) bag, the paper will remain active inside the packaging for at least 24 months. In a perfectly sealed environment, once the bag is saturated with VpCI, there is no additional loss of VpCI to the atmosphere.

Is VCI affected by hot or cold temperatures?

Cold temperatures do not significantly affect the performance of VpCI paper, however extreme heat can accelerate the loss of corrosion inhibitors over time. Proper sealing of the packaging does minimize the losses.

Can our business order just one roll of Cortec VpCI paper?

Yes, we're happy to ship one roll. Because we stock rolls for immediate shipment, you can purchase rolls when needed.

Can VCI paper be used with other rust prevention methods?

Cortec VpCI paper can be used with a wide variety of rust prevention solutions. VCI enhances and does not interfere with rust preventive coatings. VpCI paper can also be used with other VCI emitters and even desiccant products.

9. How to Seal Products with VCI?

A tightly sealed VCI packaging yields better volatile corrosion protection. Seal closed with zip-ties, packaging tape, or staples. A good closure is to fold over the film and either tape or staple the area shut. The best seal is always a heat seal. Water must be prevented from entering the packaging.

  1. Wrap individual metal parts, components, or equipment using VCI Paper
  2. Before placing the metal parts in a shipping container, line the bottom of the crate with VCI Film or Poly Bags
  3. Place a layer of parts wrapped in VCI Paper in the crate
  4. Before adding a new layer, interleave VCI Paper on top of the first layer
  5. If a wooden crate is used as a base or a pallet is used to brace the packaging environment, it is vital to wrap or cover any wood areas to prevent acidic moisture from contacting metal surfaces
  6. If corrugated cardboard separators are used between metal parts, be sure to interleave VCI Paper between the cardboard and the metal parts, as these separators can be a significant source of corrosion

10. How long can parts remain corrosion-free after removal of the VCI Package?

The duration for which metal parts remain corrosion-free after removal from a Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) package depends on several factors, including the type of VCI used, the environmental conditions to which the parts are exposed, and the specific metal materials involved. To maximise the post-removal corrosion protection, it’s advisable to:

  • Store the parts in a clean, dry, and controlled environment.

11. What is the Difference between VCI and desiccants in Preventing Corrosion?

13. How does a volatile corrosion inhibitor prevent rust and corrosion?

Volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) prevents rust and corrosion by acting as a protective barrier from external corrosive atmospheric elements such as abrasion, water, dirt, and acid gas pollutants. It also emits a corrosion-inhibiting vapour that passivates the electron flow between the metal surface’s anodic and cathodic areas. It adds water-repulsion properties that inhibit water from permeating the metal surface and provide the electrolyte for corrosion reactions.

14. How long does the protective layer formed by VCI products last?

The protective layer formed by VCI products will remain on the surface of the metal if there is no significant, continuous exchange of air within the enclosure. Ideally, there should be less than one air exchange per day (for example, when an electrical cabinet or package is opened briefly and occasionally). Once the metal part is removed from the enclosure, the corrosion-inhibiting layer dissipates from metal surfaces within about an hour, leaving the metal part clean, dry, and corrosion-free.

16. Why are VCI products more efficient and cost-effective than traditional rust prevention methods?

VCI products offer corrosion protection without having to be in direct contact with or coated onto the parts that are being protected. Metal parts must be enclosed in or with a VCI product (where airflow is minimised) for protection to occur. With VCI packaging, it is no longer necessary to apply messy oils, greases, and other corrosion protection compounds and incur the cost of their removal.
